Areas submerged due to heavy rains include Majnu Ka Tila, Mayur Vihar Phase 1, Math Bazar, Geeta Colony, and several parts of Ring Road near Kashmere Gate.
Flooding around India Gate will cause major disruption to top government offices and traffic. The area houses the Prime Minister’s Office, the President’s residence, and the offices of the four important ministries of Home, Finance, Defense, and External Affairs.
What is the reason for the increase in the water level of Yamuna?
Heavy rains in Himachal Pradesh have had a significant impact on the rising water level of the Yamuna River overflow.
There are two major barrages on Yamuna –
Dakpathar in Dehradun and Hathinikund in Yamunanagar, upstream of Delhi. There are no dams on the river and hence, most of the monsoon flow remains untapped, resulting in floods during the season.
The official said We observed that water released from Hathinikund barrage took less time to reach Delhi as compared to previous years. The main reason could be encroachment and siltation. Earlier, there was more room for water to flow. Now, It passes through a narrower cross-section.
